Our history since our foundation in 1711.

More than 300 years of history

1711

The founder,Denbei Sunagoya manufactured gold leaf under the control of the Tokugawa government.

1864

The store building was burned down by a fire in the Hamagurigomon War.

1868

The business was licensed to sell gold leaf by Meiji government.

1887

Dembei the Sixth (the Last Dembei) became the president.

1897

Mid Meiji Period: The seventh president Shintaro Hori renamed the business from Sunagoya Dembei into Shizendo Store.

Started manufacturing gold powder.
The start of Russo-Japanese War increased the demand for gold powder.
Established a brass powder manufacturing factory with water-power machines.
Started manufacturing course powders.

Started manufacturing leaves and powder of different types of metals other than gold.

1942

Kinjiro Hori became the eighth president.

1945

Expanded into new industries such as printing and construction.

1950

Shizendo was reorganised into the company HORI METAL LEAF & POWDER CO.,LTD.

1955

Supplied gold leaves to the reconstruction of the Kinkakuji Temple.

1957

Yoshiaki Hori became the ninth president.

1964

Began selling transfer foil.

1985

Developed and introduced edible gold flake[MAIKO BRAND].

1988

Opend Nagoya Branch Office.

2000

Produced 24K gold leaf KOGANEHAKU for the first time.

2001

Renovated the head office and flagshipstore.

2004

Yoshiaki Hori assumed the position of the chairman
Tomoyuki Hori became the tenth president.

2008

Opened Osaka Local Office.

2011

Celebrated the 300th anniversary of the foundation.

2015

Receive the Oscar certification.

2016

Opened the Tokyo Office.

2018

Listed as Kyoto Model company for promoting well work-life balance.

2020

Opened the cross -border EC site "Shizendo"

2022

Renewed the flagshipstore into a showroom.
